Clarity before you start a business: five questions worth answering

Five quiet questions that can save you months of building the wrong thing, and help you take one clear next step.

Who exactly is this for?

“Everybody” is not a customer. A business becomes easier to explain when you can name the person, the place and the moment. A young parent in Port Harcourt who needs after-school care is a different customer from a company looking for staff childcare. The product may look similar. The message, price and sales route are not.

Try finishing this sentence without using the word “all”: “This is for ____ who ____, and right now they ____.” If you cannot finish it, you do not have a customer yet. You have a hope. That is not a criticism. It is simply the first place clarity can help.

What problem are you actually solving?

People do not buy a website, a class or an app because it exists. They buy a change: fewer missed calls, faster bookings, a clearer menu, less wasted stock. Ask what the customer does today without you. If the answer is “nothing”, ask whether the problem is painful enough to pay for. If the answer is “they use a messy workaround”, your job is to be clearly better, not merely newer.

Write the problem in the customer's words, not yours. Then write what happens if it stays unsolved. That second sentence is the reason someone will make time for your offer.

What can you honestly promise?

A promise is not a slogan. It is what you can repeat, measure and stand behind. “I will respond within one working day” is a promise. “I will make you the biggest brand in Nigeria” is a guess with a microphone. Start with a small promise you can keep, then let the results speak.

This matters even more when money is tight. If you cannot deliver a result yet, sell the first honest step: a review, a sample, a setup, a plan. Clarity is not pretending you have arrived. It is being precise about what you can do now.

What would make the numbers work?

You do not need a perfect spreadsheet before you start. You do need to know what one customer is worth, what it costs to reach one, and how many you need to cover your basic costs. Write those three numbers down. If you do not know them, your first task is to find out, not to print a banner.

Do not borrow money to fund a question you have not tested. A small paid pilot, a few pre-orders, or five conversations can teach you more than a large launch. If the numbers do not work at a small scale, they rarely become kinder at a large one.

What is the one next step?

A clear plan is not a fifty-page document. It is the next action you can take this week, with a date and a person attached. “Talk to five school owners and ask how they handle bookings” is a next step. “Build a platform” is a project that may be premature.

Clarify0 exists for this moment: talk it through, separate the noise from the real question, and leave with one clear next step. You can start a free conversation on the clarity page. If you want a person at Clarify0 to look at it with you, ask in the chat.

Turn this into one next step.
